Manon Valentino, French BMX champion… again!
Manon Valentino, the winner of two legs of this year’s World Cup and a Sunn team member, holds onto her title as BMX Elite Women Champion of France. “I’m always so happy to have the French colours on my jerseys. I know I’ll be able to wear them for another season, which is just incredible to me. Plus, I held onto the title for the second time in my career. I’m really delighted, just like I’m pleased with the great finish that all the girls fought for, especially Axelle and me in the final metres of the Championship. She never let up before hitting the finish line, and neither did I.”

Isabeau Courdurier, EWS Silver Medallist for the second time
At the Finale Ligure, Isabeau Courdurier was under pressure from Katy Winton, who had exactly the same number of points as her in the overall rankings. To end the season in second place, the math was simple: she needed to finish ahead of Katy. Which is precisely what Isabeau did, earning her second silver medal with panache by winning the last Special Stage. And so, she came out as World Enduro Vice-champion for the second time.

The year of Kern Exo and LT Evo
Kern Exo was named mountain bike of the year, and Kern LT Evo, enduro bike of the year. The results of the Sunn Rider’s Society Team also helped to re-establish the brand as a leader in the field.

Release of a new range symbolising the brand’s comeback. Three new models dedicated to new disciplines, like the Drac with its chromoly frame for street/dirt biking and the Forest Jump. This year marks the return of the Radical and the arrival of the Kern and Kern LT.

Reorganisation
Sunn’s problems force its shareholders to initiate liquidation proceedings. Patrick Tangui, an entrepreneur from Toulouse, purchases the name and attempts to revive it. Unfortunately, he would not be successful in that endeavour and would find himself compelled to give up the company in 2012.

A comprehensive range
In 2000-2001: Release of a mudguard built into the diagonal tube, which would become a sort of trademark, especially for cross-country MTBs. Release of the Revolt 2003. Sunn has more than 40 models of bicycles of all kinds: racing, road, BMX, MTB and beach.

Sunn is the World Champion in Downhill MTB for the second year in a row
Christophe Dupouey takes the gold for cross-country in the World Championships, as does Miguel Martinez in the Juniors category.

Creation of the Sunn Free Ride Team
A free ride team is formed with David Lombard and “Mad” Fred Danion. Team member Nicolas Vouilloz leads Sunn to multiple victories, winning the World Champion title (Juniors and Elite) more than 10 times. And his collaboration with the teams at Sunn doesn’t end there: he also works with the design centre on new tests and processes to improve the bikes.

Eric Barone exceeds 200 km/h on his Sunn
Eric Barone becomes the first man to hit 200 km/h with his Sunn MTB on the speed snow track in Vars, France, a record he would beat at Les Arcs in 1997, when he exceeded 210 km/h.

Sunn, the downhill world champion
The Sunn Team has up to 24 professional riders across all categories. After many wins, Sunn BMX rider Christophe Lévêque heads to the US to compete with the best riders in the world, where he will take Sunn’s colours to the top of the podium! Sunn is now sold in the United States. Sunn releases the Riviera, a kit for street and dirt biking. Sunn becomes the World Champion in Downhill MTB. 1996 is also the year of the Teisseire Sunn Cup, the first large-scale summer tour specific to mountain biking, which was a huge success!

Anne-Caroline Chausson holds onto her juniors world title, the second in a long series, as she would remain the undefeated world champion through the end of her career with Sunn in 1998.

The MTB range expands, and more wins are racked up
Sunn introduces its Tox, 5000, Vertix, Revolt and Maxe bikes. Eric Barone joins the Sunn Team and becomes MTB World Champion in Masters Downhill. Noteworthy launch of the Radical Plus DH bike (rigid with Vitus tubes).

The Sunn MTB Team grows
Anne-Caroline Chausson leaves BMX for MTB with a modified 6003, a move that soon ears her a juniors world championship in downhill mountain biking.

This is also the year when other young BMXers decide to make the switch to mountain biking, with Florent Poussin, Cédric Gracia and Carmine Falco appearing on downhill runs with their BMX style and technique.

Sunn releases the 5003R, which would remain the benchmark for MTBs for years to come. That same year, it was named mountain bike of the year by the magazine Vélo Vert.

Sunn releases a range of basic MTBs with very carefully designed geometry and narrow steel tubes.

The height of BMX and the early days of mountain bikes
Sunn becomes a BMX world champion with the Sunn Chipie Team. In mountain biking, the first Radical is launched, to the delight of early downhill riders. A new BMX bike is also released, the Snowscoot.

MX France becomes Sunn SA
The first MTBs arrive in the US but are not at all aligned with Max Commençal’s image of a mountain bike. Rather than starting with road bikes and fitting them with knobby tyres, Sunn develops MTBs with frames that look more like big BMX bikes. Sunn needs funding to grow and looks to external investors. The MX France sole proprietorship becomes the limited company, Sunn SA. Max Commençal retains 35% of its equity and continues to lead the brand on his own.

Origin story: Creation of MX France
Max Commençal creates MX France, a small sole proprietorship. His first BMX bikes would be branded with the MX name. But that only lasted a few months. The bikes were soon renamed Sunn, a more “international” name, with two letter n’s for twice the sun!
